DIY website builders vs web developers

Do I really need a Web Developer? It’s a question that is undoubtedly, asked a lot. With so many different options and paths to create a website, it can be quite daunting choosing the right one especially if you have very little knowledge in what it takes to build a website. So, as someone who spends majority of their time online, building websites for businesses and working with people in the same dilemma, I thought I’d address the above question.

Firstly, just for those that are unclear, a DIY website builder is were you can essentially build a website without having any knowledge of coding. Some examples of companies that provide this service would be WIX or Shopify or even wordpress.com.

Most DIY website services provide you with an online platform which allows you to visually construct you website through dragging and dropping elements. However despite not needing any coding knowledge, it can still take quite a bit of time to get use to using their platforms properly.

Generally the main pro of a DIY website is that it’s cost effective, in that you will only need to fork out very little cash to get something up and running.

However, DIY websites are renowned for being limited in regards to functionality and layouts. In some cases, this can result in you having to compromise and in turn result in a bit of a slap dash website which may come across superficial to your visitors. Secondly, if you honestly don’t have the slightest clue to how a website should be laid out, then the chances of your website looking like a mishmash are obviously going to be higher.

On the other hand, you have the choice of using a just using a web developer / Designer – a human being (believe it or not) that has expertise on designing and creating websites and can help give advice and suggestions for your website too. This of course, would come at more cost.

So which one do you use?

Well generally speaking, if you need an extremely simple website and you’re not too fussed about the layout/design and have some spare time on your hands then, the DIY website builders will probably be the way to go and do the job nicely. You might have to put a bit of time in learning how to use the DIY website builders but generally speaking, most are fairly easy to use.

Alternatively, if you want something that is aesthetically pleasing or, something that requires a lot of functionality, then web designer / developer is the way to go. This is especially true if, you rely on sales coming in directly from you website as it can really pay off to have expert knowledge and advice for getting things designed and developed properly.

So to summarise, if you’re on a very small budget and just need something to get you online then DIY website builder is the way, otherwise, a web developer / designer is the best and fastest way to propel you business or project online.
